Effects of the Azathioprine Administered during Pregnancy on the Development of Lymphoid Organs of the Neonatal Rats

Abstract
Azathioprine was administered to the pregnant Sprague-Dawley rats on the 7-8th day of gestation to observe the effects of azathioprine on the lymphoid organs of the neonatal rat:.. Thymus was resected on the 0, 1st, 2nd 3rd and 4th week and were observed on the light and electron microscope, and spleen was resected for the plaque assay.
The results observed were as followings:
1. There were much premature lymphocytes in the thymic cortex of the experimental group than the control group.
2. There were swelling of the mitochondrial cristae in the lymphocytes of the thymus in the experimental group since 2 weeks of age.
3. There were much necrotizing lymphocytes, macrophages and dividing lymphocytes in the thymus of the experimental group than the control group since 2 weeks of age.
4. The number of plaque forming cells in the 4 weeks old rat spleen of the experimental group were less than the control group.
It is suggested that the development of the thymus was delayed by the azathioprine administered during pregnancy, so the immunity of the spleen was affected secondarily.
